5 Reasons Why Staycationing Will Help You Fall Back In Love With Your City

Having lived on London’s doorstep for the majority of my life, I become very disgruntled with it from time to time. It’s like an irritating lover that you can’t end things with because you’ve been together since you were teenagers and you don’t quite know how to be your own person without them.

And real talk, I can’t be the only one that get’s like that about the places closest to them, right?

So every now and then I have to take a little ‘Staycation’ in London rather than a weekend in a new European City to allow myself to fall in love with it all over again. Here are my top reasons as to why I think it’s important for everyone to do the same in their City.

1. It will help you find yummy new eateries; and whose way to their heart isn’t through their stomach?!

(This picture was actually taken in Amsterdam, but no two girls have ever looked happier about the food they’re about to eat)

When you spend most of your time in the same City, you grow accustomed to meeting your friends in the same dining spots on a rotation. As much as I love my faves, it’s also nice to venture out and eat somewhere new from time to time. On my last Staycation I had French for one dinner and Japanese for the other, and then ate all the bread and humous in a cute little outdoor area of a restaurant by the Tower of London for one lunch and returned to my favourite brunch spot for the other… woops.

2. You can see it in a whole new angle or light that you’ve never seen it in before.

Just bloody look at that view from Skygarden in the Walkie Talkie building in London!

Seriously though, there are so many different places that you wouldn’t have seen your City from yet. It might sound lame, but sometimes seeing it in a different light or angle can help remind you what you loved about it so much in the first place. And worst comes to worst, if that doesn’t work then you might still manage to get a cracking viewpoint snap for your Insta.

3. Experiencing it with a new person can be like experiencing it for the first time, making you forget about all the little annoyances you have with it.

The boy and I on a drunken staycation… (sorry Mum!)

I was kinda hating on London a lot just before my Staycation with the boy. But the minute we walked into the lobby of the beautiful Doubletree Hilton next to the Tower of London, all of the hate of the City seemed to drain away from me.

Our weekend was filled with hanging out in areas that I don’t normally hang out in, where we went out for dinner and drinks with friends at St Catherine’s Docks, visited the aquarium and drank Pimms along Southbank, tried out new restaurants and then we gave in and returned to an old fave for drinks again. It was the most perfect weekend in the World that definitely restored my love for my City back to the way it once was.

4. It can be easily done on a whim, and very little gets you racier and help you fall back in love with something than a little bit of spontaneity.

If you’ve had a rough week then being able to just give in to your City and let it pull you into it for a weekend of doing whatever you want without a care in the world is a sure way to get your heart beating for it the way it once did.

Allow your City to take care of you, give you a massage and take you out dancing until early hours of the morning. You’ll both feel better about the week you’ve had, and feel better about the City that you’re living in.

5. To quit arguing about money with your City for the weekend and just treat yoself and do whatever you want to do.

There are very few things worse in a relationship than constantly squabbling about money.  If you’re constantly walking around your City counting every penny then you’re going to end up resenting it because you can’t enjoy it the way that you want to.

I’m not saying that you should become outrageous with money, but every now and then you really do deserve a big old splurge on whatever you fancy. It will help you drop the guard that you’ve put up against the City that you live in, and allow you to have fun together the way that you used to.

I love the idea of a staycation! I live in DC and it is so easy to forget there are things I have never tried here, new restaurants, museums, parks, thanks for the inspiration!

These are some good reasons! There’s definitely something to be said about having a staycation. Not only is it cheaper haha, it can also help you appreciate your city more, like you said. I’ll be needing to travel less in the next few years which had me disappointed at first. But now after having read this post, I’m a lot more excited haha. Thanks! 🙂
