13 Resolutions You Can Make Without Being A Total Cockwomble About It

There is no hashtag I love spending my time trawling through Twitter looking at more than #Newyearnewme

If there is one thing I can rely on humanity for; it is to spend the first half of January going to the gym and desperately attempting to make the switch from a pint of alcohol to the goodness to water. Every January we make ourselves all of these promises, and every January we fail at sticking to them.

I’ve put together a complete list of resolutions you can quietly make for yourself that don’t actually involve you being a smug tosspot running around telling everyone about your juice cleanse and #cleanliving

1) Give yourself a good, firm pat on the back when you’ve done something you’re proud of.

As a whole, we tend to scold ourselves when we’ve done something stupid, and look passed the things that we’ve done good. We rely on the praise from others, likes on our Social Media accounts &  a standing ovation from a room full of strangers before we feel pride in the things that we’ve done.

You don’t need to be a total dick about it, but why not start the year by allowing yourself to feel proud in something you’ve worked hard on. YOU GO GLEN COCO.

2) Indulge in random acts of kindness without posting a Facebook status about it.

You could buy someone homeless something hot to drink, or a bit of lunch. Maybe you want to help an old Lady with her shopping, or you might even go out of your way to help return a random Dog to their owner.

As tempting as it may be, try not to alert all your Facebook friends about it mid good deed. Just soak in the feeling of doing something good for someone else.

3) Learn something new.

This is something we should all be trying to do at all times anyway. An active mind helps to keep Alzheimer’s at bay, and it’s a great way to keep yourself entertained in the evening alongside your Netflix addiction.

4) Quit worrying about what everyone else is doing.

This Christmas and New Year has found my newsfeed absolutely flooded with Engagement announcements. As happy as I’ve been for people, I’ve also been sitting there, terribly alone and wondering if I should be in the same place as them.

But here’s the thing, we choose our own lives, and fill them up with the things that we want most in the World. Focus on you and what it is that you want the most, and quit worrying about what everyone else is doing.

5) Stop beating yourself up over things in the past that really can’t be changed.

Unfortunately you can’t bring someone back from the dead, you can’t make someone un-walk out on you, you can’t go back and not make that dumb mistake at work, and you can’t take back that thing that you said to that person that one time in 2011.

It’s time to let it go kid.

6) Travel as much as you can.

Whether you’ve got a full time job or very little money. Don’t let these things hold you back. You don’t have to grab your backpack and disappear forever, even if that’s what Instagram makes you think you should be doing. Travel doesn’t have to be expensive. There are tons of sites such as Secret Flying and Holiday Pirates that make travel incredibly affordable, so 2016 could be your year of enjoying ALL the holidays for half the cost that you originally thought it was going to be.

7) Read more.

Use all transport to your advantage to read a good old book. Take a book to the bath, read before bed. Reading is in my opinion always a good idea.

8) Give up on trying to please other people.

Don’t worry, it’s 100% not just you that does this, we’re all guilty of doing it. Obviously don’t be a selfish asshole that only cares about themselves, but you also don’t need to live your life constantly trying to please others. It’s you that has to live with what you’re doing, not anyone else, so make sure that you’re as happy with your decisions as your friends and the people that you’re trying to please are.

9) Turn off.

Every now and then I have a day where I turn off everything that people could contact me on. I don’t check my emails, missed calls, Whatsapps – nothing. Every now and then try and have a phone free day and see how you feel!

10) Do something that terrifies you.

When I wrote my Bucketlist last year, I wrote that I wanted to do something that scares me. Whether that is to swim with Sharks, do a Sky Dive or even a Bungee Jump, I’m going to do it this year.

It’s important to do things that we’re scared of doing, just to remind ourselves that we are capable of doing anything. And you really, really are.

11) Substitute “I want to” for “I’m going to”.

When we talk about things that we want to do, we’re often aware that we will probably never do them. But by changing “want” to “going”, you trick your mind into thinking that you’re confident that it will happen. You will become more determined to do that thing by saying this which will increase your chances of doing it significantly.

12) Find something that you love in a picture that you hate of yourself.

Have you ever looked at a picture of yourself that someone has taken and absolutely hated everything about it? Followed by looking at that same picture a couple of years later and wondering why you hated it so much?

You’re only going to look this exact way at this moment in your life. You’re beautiful, start appreciating it, because in ten years time you might wish that you looked that way again.

13) Cut out all of the people that don’t make you happy.

When you barely have enough hours in the day to see all of the friends that you want to see, why are you still wasting time seeing people that don’t make you feel happy out of obligation?

It’s awkward as fuck cutting people out of your life, but who gives a damn?

Reckon you will give any of these a go? I’m definitely going to try and praise myself more & I’d also like to learn something new.

What are your resolutions? What resolutions tick you off the most when you hear people making them? Let me know below!

Cockwomble – Learnt a new word!

I am going to try some of the things you suggest. I think for me it is making sure I define the goal more precisely, as I can be a bit vague.
